Grooming a dog involves keeping it tidy and helping it look respectable. By trimming its hair so often by taking it to a special hairdressers or by doing it yourself you help keep your dog clean and tidy. When your dog goes out on walks it probably picks up lots of dirt on its paws and in its fur, so it will be important to wash the dog when it does get dirty. It will be far easier to wash the dog when it has short hair, so make sure you keep it cut to a sensible length. You should also check your dog for ticks and fleas, and by keeping its hair short you should be able to notice these creatures a lot easier.
You can usually find local dog hairdressers in the yellow pages or on the Internet, you could try asking at your local vet too. If you are careful and have some of your own equipment you could probably cut the hair itself, and will save you money in the process too. You should aim to cut the dogs hair about once every 2 months or so, but it depends on how quickly the dogs hair grows.

Try and wash your dog every time it goes for a walk and looks muddy or dirty. The best way to wash it is to run some warm water in a container and then get the dog to stand in the water whilst you wash its paws and underside, making sure you rinse any fur to get rid of dirt.
It would be worthwhile inspecting your dog for ticks and fleas every few weeks as well. Try laying your dog out on some sheets and inspect its fur with a special comb, and apply some special shampoo if you find any fleas. If you find any ticks, use a special tick-comb to remove and destroy them. They try to stick to the body of the dog, feeding off of the dog's blood.
